High resolution radio studies of WR colliding-wind systems

چکیده

High resolution radio observations with MERLIN and the VLA spatially resolve the thermal and non-thermal emission in WR147 and WR146. In both of these systems, the WR stars have massive companions. The relative positions of the radio emission and the stellar components is consistent with the non-thermal emission originating in the region where the two stellar winds in the system collide. In total eleven WR star systems are known to be non-thermal emitters, of which ten have massive companions, strongly supporting the hypothesis that nonthermal emission in WR stars requires a massive binary system. VLBI presents the exciting prospect of imaging the structure of the non-thermal plasma within the wind-collision region on AU scales, potentially having a major impact on our understanding of colliding-wind systems.

The colliding - wind binary WR 140 : the particle acceleration laboratory

WR+O star binary systems exhibit synchrotron emission arising from relativistic electrons accelerated where the wind of the WR star and that of its massive binary companion collide-the wind-collision region (WCR). These " colliding-wind " binaries (CWB), provide an excellent laboratory for the study of particle acceleration, with the same physical processes as observed in SNRs, but at much high...

Radio emission models of Colliding-Wind Binary Systems

We present calculations of the spatial and spectral distribution of the radio emission from a wide WR+OB colliding-wind binary system based on high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations and solutions to the radiative transfer equation. We account for both thermal and synchrotron radio emission, free-free absorption in both the unshocked stellar wind envelopes and the shocked gas, synchrotron se...

Radio observations of colliding winds in massive stars

This brief review describes radio observations of colliding winds in massive stars starting with the first direct observational support for the colliding-wind model advanced in the early 1990’s to explain non-thermal radio and thermal X-ray emission in some massive stars. Studies of the well-studied and highly-eccentric WR+O star systemWR140 are described along with recent observations of O-sta...

Gamma-ray emission from Wolf-Rayet binaries

In the colliding wind region of early-type binaries, electrons can be accelerated up to relativistic energies displaying power-law spectra, as demonstrated by the detection of non-thermal radio emission from several WR+OB systems. The particle acceleration region, located between the stars, is exposed to strong photon fields in such a way that inverse Compton cooling of the electrons could resu...

Hydrodynamics and High-energy Physics of Wr Colliding Winds

The stellar winds flowing out of the components of WR + OB binaries can collide and the shock waves are formed. Stellar wind collision, particle acceleration by the shocks and generation of X-ray, γ-ray, radio and IR emission in WR + OB binaries are discussed.
